I discovered this game in the Teacher's Area here on AOL. I have adapted it for use with a Cub Scout Den. But it could be used at any level of Scouting including Girl Scouting. In fact I would encourage all scout units to play along.
Game: Postcard Geography
Materials Needed: Map of US(or world map if we get any International participants)
Post cards
Description:
Send post cards to other scouting units(dens, troops, etc.) around the world (or at least the USA. You will receive post cards from them. Scouts will gain a better understanding of our world, cities, and letter writing skills. They will enjoy receiving cards from different places and then locating them on the map. Make a display of your cards and map to present at a Pack meeting or Troop meeting.
1. If your group wishes to participate in this project, E-mail me (KlineJr). Give me your name, group type and name/number, and mailing address.
2. In one month I will E-mail a list back to everyone that wishes to participate. This list will contain the addresses of the other participants. I will update the list weekly and E-mail the updated list to you.
3. Prepare a post card to send to the other groups. Include information about your city and state, your Scout group, whatever information you feel would be interesting to others around the world/country. Have your scouts help decide what to include.
4. Prepare a posterboard with the map on it. When postcards arrive, attach the card to the edge of the poster and run a string to the point of origin.
5. Allow your scouts to address the outgoing cards.
6. Check your advancement guidelines for how this can benefit your unit. This would fall in the category of pen pals, geography, etc.
7. When the project is finished you could make a graph showing where you got the most cards from.
8. The goal is to receive as many post cards as possible, from as many places as possible.
